How can we address climate change with our lifestyle choices?
It is our responsibility to preserve
the Planet for future generations – our small individual endeavors can help
fight the big climate change.
Climate change has started affecting our planet way
more than we think. With global warming marked as one of the biggest threats to
the universe, climatologists from different countries have unanimously inferred
that the foremost reason behind this catastrophic impact is pollution.
While we all are pretty much aware of this anticipated
environmental disaster, not many of us are taking initiatives to address the
same and that's unfortunate. Do you know just by making some minor lifestyle
choices, you can actually contribute to the healing of our planet in a major
way?
Here’s how!
Commute Green: Millions of us drive to work regularly; this results
in millions of cars emitting greenhouse gases regularly. Vehicle emission needs
to be combated on priority. A recent study suggests that by going car-free you
can reduce 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide, which is almost a quarter of the average
annual emissions (9.2 tons approximately) contributed by a single person in a
developed country.
Opt for eco-friendly commute instead. Take public
transportation or ride a bike. The latter will, in fact, help you report for
work earlier and it’s a great method of exercise too.
Conserve Energy: Increase energy efficiency and prevent pollution just
by altering some simple yet fundamental habits.
·
Turn off lights
while leaving the room
·
Unplug
devices when not in use
·
Install
energy-efficient/LED bulbs
·
Use a hot
water bottle as a substitute for thermostat
Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are
becoming ever more inexpensive across the world. IRENA (International Renewable
Energy Agency) has come up with an analytical report that suggests, renewable
energy sources such as geothermal, solar, hydropower, bio-energy and onshore
wind will be cheaper than or on par with fossil fuels very soon.
Change your Diet: Meat industry aggravates global warming in three
severe ways.
·
Cow-burps
release a lot of methane (a harmful greenhouse gas)
·
Feeding
cows with excessive maize and soy makes for an inefficient meat processing
procedure
·
Cows
thrive on fertilizers releasing greenhouse gases and plenty of plants coming
from cleared forests
Reduce animal protein consumption by half and cut the
carbon footprint of your diet by more than 40%. No one’s asking you to become a
vegan or even a vegetarian, just become a ‘flexiterian’ – cut down gradually.
Fly Less: A regular transatlantic round-trip can end up
releasing as much as 1.6 tons of CO2. This also points out the inequality
related to climate change – only a small section of the total human population
flies and even fewer take flights frequently but the adverse effects of flying
are encountered by all.
The current situation of COVID 19 has highlighted that
not all travels are essential and virtual meetings can be as effective. Avoid a
flight whenever possible even after the pandemic is gone.
Shop Differently: Most things we buy leave carbon footprints either from
the production aspect or transportation aspect or both. Today's fast-paced
fashion contributes to carbon emission significantly.
Go for sustainable brands; they use natural or
recycled materials that require less water, little energy, hardly any chemical
treatment and no pesticides or fertilizers.
Mission ECOLOOM is to work in collaboration towards a
sustainable future. Our sole focus is to strike a balance between the planet
and its people from the perspective of fashion. We use as many recyclable and
